NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State volleyball team made its last home game of the 2007 season a memorable one for senior night honorees
Vanessa Faircloth (Lumberton, N.C.) and
Abaina Farrell (Charlotte Amalie, U.S.V.I.) with a dominating 3-0 win over Winston-Salem State (4-25) on Friday night at Echols Hall. NSU (7-25) won the match 30-9, 30-22, 30-19.
NSU came out strong in the first game. The Spartans took a quick 2-0 lead on a Lady Ram attack error. Brandie Beane tied the game at 4-4 with a kill, but
Chantel Cherry (Portsmouth, Va.) answered with a kill of her own, putting NSU up 5-4. The Spartans did not look back and the Lady Rams could only manage five more points for the rest of the game. NSU hit .438 with 14 kills and no errors in game 1.
Games 2 and 3 were a bit closer, but WSSU could score no more then 22 points in either game.
Valentina Pushkina led WSSU with seven kills and Beane had 10 digs and two service aces. Pushkina and Beane both had 9 assists apiece.
For NSU, Cherry hit .375 with 12 kills, 10 digs and two blocks.
Yolanda Roberts (Virginia Beach, Va.) tallied 11 kills and six digs while hitting .269 for the match.
Shardonay Blueford (Chesapeake, Va.) had 16 digs and Farrell had 10.
Solange Honore (San Fernando, Trinidad) had match-highs of 29 assists and six aces.
The Spartans will have to wait until early next week to find out if they will be the third or fourth seed in the 2007 MEAC Volleyball Tournament, which runs from Nov. 16-17 at the Hampton University Convocation Center.
