NSU Women to Take Part in North Florida Tournament

NORFOLK, Va.
— The Norfolk State women's basketball team travels to Jacksonville, Fla. to take part in the University of North Florida Holiday Classic. The Spartans will take on host North Florida at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Savannah State at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

The NSU-UNF game will be available live on ASun.tv, the new broadband network providing live and on-demand video of Atlantic Sun Conference sporting events. NSU is coming off of a two-loss outing in the University of New Mexico's Comcast Lobo Shootout. The Spartans (1-5) fell 83-36 to UNM in the opening round and the lost 70-57 to Southern in the consolation game. Freshman forward Danelle Tate (Stafford, Va.) averaged a team-leading 11.2 points per game in the tournament. Sophomore forward/center Tiffany Gadsden (Columbia, S.C.) led the Spartan defense, averaging nine rebounds, 4.5 blocks, and 3.0 steals in the two games, earning MEAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors. Against Southern, Gadsden recorded a game-high eight blocks and a team-high 14 rebounds (10 defensive).

North Florida (3-5) is coming off a 51-37 victory over Southeast Louisiana on Dec. 8. The Lady Ospreys held SE Louisiana to just 11-of-40 shooting from the floor (27.5 percent) for the game. Shandrea Moore led UNF with 13 points, while Juilemay Syquio had 12 points and Jennifer Bowen had 10. The Lady Ospreys had a season-high 15 assists and outrebounded SE Louisiana 33-30.

Coming into the tournament, Savannah State is 4-4 and fresh off a 75-58 loss to the University of Texas-El Paso on Sunday. The Lady Tigers were led by Ivy Smith who scored 16 points. Milan Johnson had 13 points and five rebounds, while Antionette Williams had 10 points. On the season, Ivy leads the Lady Tigers in scoring with 16 points per game. Johnson paces the team on the boards, averaging 5.3 rebounds per game.
