North Florida Defeats NSU 66-40 in Holiday Classic

Spartans Lose 5th Consecutive Game

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.
— Juliemay Syquio had 17 points off the bench and led three University of North Florida players in double figures as the Lady Ospreys defeated Norfolk State 66-40 on Tuesday night at UNF Arena.

Shandrea Moore had 13 points, five assists, and five rebounds for UNF (4-5), while Shennette Sheffield contributed 10 points, nine rebounds, and a pair of blocks and steals.

NSU is now 1-6 on the season and has lost five straight games.

The Spartans had another rough outing, as they only connected on 21.8 percent of their shots (12-of-55). They shot just 17.6 percent from 3-point range (3-of-17) and 52.0 percent from the free-throw line (13-of-25).

NSU tried to keep it close in the first half, but things spiraled out of control quickly. The Spartans were down by one, 10-9, with 13:13 left in the first stanza, but UNF went on a 22-8 run to take a 32-17 lead into halftime.

Syquio and Sheffield combined for 23 second-half points, helping UNF to a convincing 26-point win.

The Spartans were led by Areya Walker (Portsmouth, Va.) who had 14 points and a career-high tying 14 rebounds. Tiffany Gadsden (Columbia, S.C.) also grabbed 14 boards and had four blocks and a steal.

NSU outrebounded UNF 48-46, but had 37 turnovers and sent the Lady Ospreys to the free-throw line 35 times.

The Spartans wrap up tournament play on Wednesday when they play Savannah State at 5 p.m.
