NORFOLK, Va. – Former standout Norfolk State track sprinter Chris Brown won two gold medals at the recently completed 2007 Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro competing for his native Bahamas. Brown took the individual crown in the 400 meters and ran the anchor leg on the Bahamas' 1,600-meter relay team.
Brown ran a time of 44.85 to take the 400 title, edging Tyler Christopher of Canada (45.05). Brown also teamed with Andrae Williams, Avard Moncur and Michael Matheau to run a 3:01.94 in the 4x400 relay, beating a team from the United States (3:02.44).
"I hadn't competed in a while, so my main focus going us was to come out healthy," said Brown, a two-time Division I All-American at NSU in the 400 in 2000 and 2001. "I just give the Lord all the credit. He gave me the ability to perform at a high level."
Brown will compete at the 2007 world championships in Osaka, Japan, beginning later this month.
