BLACKSBURG, Va. – Sophomore Marlon Woods (Norfolk, Va.) earned three top-six finishes in the jumping events, including a victory in the long jump, and senior Troy Wilkerson (Norfolk, Va.) ran a school-record time in the 300 meters to lead the Norfolk State men's track team at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Saturday.
Woods set a personal indoor-best with his jump of 24 feet, 3 inches in the long jump. That also tied the school indoor record held by teammate Kenrick Brathwaite (Nassau, Bahamas). Woods also set a personal-best in the triple jump, finishing in second place (50-2 ½), and came in sixth in the high jump (6-8 ¾). Woods also ran his fastest time in the 55 meter preliminaries (6.48).
Wilkerson ran a school-record time of 34.29 seconds to finish a close second behind Charlotte's Darius Law in the 300 meters (34.16). Raymond Brown (Richmond, Va.) also ran a personal-best in the 300, finishing in fourth place in 34.44 seconds.
Woods and Wilkerson were far from the only standouts. Jonathan Soimo (Kapsabet, Kenya) was fourth in the 5,000 (15:51.26); Keenan Harris (Norfolk, Va.) was fifth in the 800 (1:57.23); freshman Tyrell Moon (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished sixth in the 500 meters (1:05.60); and Dominic Luka (Marietta, N.Y.) was seventh in the mile (4:19.02). Another personal-best was turned in by sophomore Brett Dodd (San Antonio, Texas), who cleared a personal-best 13-11 ¼ in the pole vault to break yet another school indoor record.
Both Spartan relay teams came in second place. The 4x200 team of Trayman Hill (Greensville County, Va.), Brandon Harris (Norfolk, Va.), Brown and Randy Lee (Washington, D.C.) ran a time of 1:27.64, just behind Clemson's 1:27.05.
The 4x400 team of Wilkerson, Moon, Brown and Lee ran a time of 3:14.73 to finish as runner-up behind Tennessee's time of 3:14.06.
The Spartans return to action next Saturday at the University of Maryland.
