UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – First-year sophomore Carlton Phipps (Lynchburg, Va.) ran a personal-best time of 1:03.88 to win the men's 500 meters, leading a strong showing from the Spartan men's track team at the Penn State Invitational over the weekend.
Phipps also anchored the NSU 4x400 meter relay team, which won its heat in a season-best time of 3:13.26. The relay team, which also included Troy Wilkerson (Norfolk, Va.), Randy Lee (Washington, D.C.) and Raymond Brown (Richmond, Va.), finished fourth overall.
NSU's other top finish in running events came via sophomore Avery Wilson (Portsmouth, Va.), who placed third in the 60-meter hurdles (7.97).
Phipps' time in the 500 was just one of several PRs turned in by NSU runners on Saturday. Trayman Hill (Greensville County, Va.) ran a personal indoor best time of 21.77 seconds to finish fifth in the 200. Brown and Wilkerson ran personal indoor best times in the 400, tying for fifth place in 48.81 seconds.
Keenan Harris (Norfolk, Va.) also earned a top-five finish Saturday, running an indoor PR in the 800 (1:53.23) to place fifth. Teammate Dominic Luka (Marietta, N.Y.) also ran an indoor PR in the 800, placing 10th in the invitational section in 1:52.45.
The NSU field athletes were paced by sophomore Marlon Woods (Norfolk, Va.). He placed fourth in the high jump (6-9) and third in the long jump (24-1).
NSU is off next week before returning to the track on Feb. 9 at Christopher Newport.
