FAIRFAX, Va. – Making his long-awaited Norfolk State debut, first-year sophomore Corey Vinston (Hampton, Va.) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship in the 60 meters at the Spartans' season-opener, the George Mason Father Diamond Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The men totaled 141.5 points, well ahead of second place George Mason (92).
Vinston's qualifying time of 6.69 seconds easily won his heat and earned his provisional qualifying time. He ran 6.73 to win the event in the finals. Vinston also placed third in the long jump, first among collegiate runners, with his leap of 7.33 meters.
Sophomore Marlon Woods (Norfolk, Va.) also made a strong showing, winning the high jump (2.10 meters) and taking second in the 60 hurdles (8.06). Freshman Aramis Massenburg (Ettrick, Va.) was close behind Woods in the hurdles, running 8.10 to place third.
The Spartans' throwers also fared well. Seniors Marlon Powells (Hyattsville, Md.) and Reginald Sands (Nassau, Bahamas) placed first and second, respectively, in the shot put. Powells threw 14.75 meters, and Sands 14.48.
The NSU men are back in action next Friday and Saturday at Virginia Tech.
