NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State women's basketball team will travel to Durham, N. C. to take on the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Norfolk State (2-7) snapped a six-game losing streak with a 68-59 victory over Virginia Union on Thursday night at Echols Hall. Senior forward Areya Walker posted team highs of 16 points and 16 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double, while Tashawna Higgins contributed a career-high 14 points and Ashley Compton added 10 for NSU.
The Spartans, who shot 46 percent en route to a season-high 48 second-half points, were 21-of-29 from the free throw line, with Higgins making 8-of-9. She also pulled down five rebounds. Walker finished 6-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. She also had three assists, second-most on the team. Walker now has grabbed at least 10 rebounds in four consecutive games.
North Carolina Central is coming off a 78-33 loss to Duquesne on Monday. The Dukes defense set a program record for fewest points allowed, which stood for almost 23 years. Angelica Boles led the Lady Eagles with 13 points, while Latoya Bennett grabbed 11 rebounds. On the season, Jori Nwachukwu leads NCCU with 14.5 points and 8.7 rebounds in 26.8 minutes per game. She is shooting 46.9 percent (91-of-194) from the field and 71.9 percent (64-of-89) from the free-throw line.
