Gleaton Leads S.C. State to 3-1 Win Over NSU

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Jarne Gleaton had a match-high 15 kills and added 12 digs and two blocks to help the South Carolina State volleyball team defeat Norfolk State 3-1 on Wednesday night at Dukes Gymnasium. The Lady Bulldogs won 25-22 34-32, 26-24, 25-18 to improve to 10-18 on the season and 4-2 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

The highlight of the match was undoubtedly the second set, which NSU (9-21, 4-3) won 34-32. The Spartans jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead and easily extended it to 11-3 after a kill by Angie Clewis (Glen Heights, Tex.). But the Lady Bulldogs caught up and tied it up at 24-all on a kill by Peri Ligons. The teams traded points back and forth, but the Spartans took the lead on a Yolanda Roberts (Virginia Beach, Va.) kill and got the win on an attack error by Ligons.

The Spartans came to close to winning the third set, but SCSU held them off and eventually took the fourth set.

Shabaree Roberson had 12 kills for SCSU, while Ligons had a double-double of 11 kills and 13 digs.

For NSU, Roberts had 13 kills, five digs, two total blocks. Breanna Allums (Channelview, Tex.) tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 15 digs.

The Spartans have a week off before they go down to Raleigh, N.C. to take on North Carolina Central on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
