Blazeski Leads FAMU Over NSU, 3-0

Box Score

NORFOLK, Va. — Jovana Blazeski had a match-high 14 kills and hit .211 with nine digs as the Florida A&M volleyball team defeated Norfolk State 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-14) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match on Friday night at Echols Hall.

FAMU improved to 10-11 overall and 6-1 in the MEAC. NSU fell to 8-22 on the season and ends conference play with a 3-5 record. The Spartans should qualify for the MEAC Tournament, but will have to wait until next week to know which seed they will receive.

FAMU came out hot in the first set, taking a quick 5-0 lead and easily extending it to 13-5 after a kill by Chelsea Pennick. Both teams scored 12 more points, but NSU could not overcome the early point deficit.

The Spartans took a 2-0 lead to start the second set and hung with the Rattlers for most of the way. A kill by Nicole Kessner (Blacksburg, Va.) tied it 15-all, but Blazeski answered with a kill of her own and the Rattlers did not look back.

In the third set, NSU took advantage of some early Rattler errors to have a 5-2 advantage to start the set. A kill by Aurelia Isham (Lancaster, Tex.) tied the set at 7-all, but FAMU calmed down and outscored the Spartan 18-7 to take the match.

Samara Ferraz tallied 11 kills and Susan Egoavil had 32 assists for FAMU.

Angie Clewis (Glen Heights, Tex.) and Yolanda Roberts (Virginia Beach, Va.) each had five kills to lead the Spartans. Breanna Allums (Channelview, Tex.) led all players with 13 digs and Kessner had 12 assists.

NSU hosts Winston-Salem State at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
