Box Score

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.
— Host William & Mary overcame a career-high 32 points from Norfolk State guard Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) by shooting 53 percent from the floor in a 74-58 Tribe victory on Wednesday night at Kaplan Arena.

Danny Sumner scored 24 points and David Schneider 20 for W&M (1-2), which made 63 percent (12-of-19) of its shots from the floor in the second half.

Up by 11 at the intermission, Tribe opened the second half on a 19-2 run over the first 6:42, capped by a Schneider layup, to take a 50-22 lead. The 28-point bulge was the largest of the game for W&M.

NSU (1-1) got as close as 12, 70-58, on the third and final 3-pointer of the night by Deloach with 1:08 left. Kevin Worsley (Chesapeake, Va.) then snatched his fifth steal of the night, leading to a breakaway for Corey Lyons (Bronx, N.Y.). But Lyons missed both free throws with a chance to cut it to 10 with just under a minute to play.

The game was tight in the early going, with five lead-changes in the first seven minutes. But a 3-pointer by Matt McFadden capped a 10-0 Tribe run which resulted in a 20-11 lead for the hosts.

NSU answered with five straight points on two free throws by Deloach and a 3-pointer by Lyons to get within 20-16 with 7:55 left in the first half. But the Tribe outscored NSU 11-5 over the rest of the half and limited the Spartans to 29 percent shooting (8-of-28) in the period.

Deloach did his best to keep NSU close in the second half. He scored 23 of NSU's 38 second-half points. Deloach finished the game shooting 12-of-23 from the floor, 3-of-5 from behind the arc, and 5-of-7 from the foul line. His 32 points exceeded his previous career high of 30 set in an overtime win at Bethune-Cookman last season.

Forward Brandon Monroe (Raeford, N.C.) added 10 points and nine rebounds for NSU.

The Tribe ended the night making 10-of-23 (44 percent) from 3-point range. Sumner and Schneider were a combined 6-of-12.

The Spartans are back in action on Tuesday at Michigan. Tip-off is at 8 p.m. EST.
