WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Dani Kell posted a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds, both game-highs, as the William & Mary women's basketball team routed Norfolk State 98-38 on Thursday night at the Kaplan Arena. The 60-point margin was the largest allowed by a Spartan team since a 95-35 loss to Old Dominion on Feb. 19, 1980.
W&M (2-1) started the game on a 17-2 run and quickly extended their lead to 20, 29-9, on a jumper by Janine Aldridge with 5:49 left in the first half. Aldridge ended the first-half scoring with another jumper at the 39-second mark to put the Tribe up by 32, 46-14, at the break.
NSU (0-3) tried to close the gap in the second half, but was hampered by poor shooting, turnovers and fouls. The Spartans shot 26.7 percent (8-of-30) in the second period with 18 turnovers and committed 14 second-half fouls. They only connected on 14 of their 60 shots (23.3 percent) for the game and were 2-of-7 (28.6 percent) from 3-point range. For the game, W&M went to the free-throw line 29 times, making good on 20 free throws.
The Tribe shot 50 percent (34-of-68) for the game from the field and were 10-of-25 (40 percent) from beyond the arc. W&M got good production from its bench players, who contributed 53 points in the win. No W&M player was on the court for more than 27 minutes.
Taysha Pye finished with 16 points, while Aldridge, Katy Oblinger and Kelly Heath each had 12 for the Tribe. Tiffany Benson had a game-high seven blocks and grabbed five rebounds.
For the Spartans, Marquilla Evans (Portsmouth, Va.) contributed 11 points and grabbed three boards, while Danelle Tate (Stafford, Va.) had nine points and six rebounds. Tiffany McNair (Virginia Beach, Va.) tallied career-highs in minutes (25), points (five), rebounds (seven) and assists (one).
The Spartans return to action against Old Dominion on Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. at the Ted Constant Center.
