Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.
– Desmond Yates scored 18 points to lead four Middle Tennessee State players in double figures as the Raiders dealt Norfolk State its eighth straight loss, 77-56 on Sunday night on the second day of the Basketball Travelers Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Missouri State at JQH Arena.

The Spartans' eight-game losing streak is the second-longest in school history, behind only a nine-game skid in the 1997-98 season, NSU's first in Division I.

MTSU (6-5) outrebounded the Spartans (1-8) 45-26. The Blue Raiders also shot 50 percent while holding NSU to 35 percent. The Blue Raiders never trailed, and there was just one tie in the game, at 2-2.

Leading 33-24 at the half, MTSU scored the first five points of the second half on two Yates free throws and a 3-pointer by Demetrius Green to push their lead into double digits, where it stayed the rest of the way.

Green contributed 17 points, and Montarrio Haddock and Kevin Kanaskie added 11 apiece. Kanaskie had a game-high eight rebounds and Yates had seven for MTSU, which scored 20 second-chance points on 16 offensive rebounds.

Spartan guard Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Corey Lyons (Bronx, N.Y.) added 13 points and Raphael Hall (Chesapeake, Va.) a season-high eight. Brandon Monroe grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and scored six points.

The Spartans play their final game of the round-robin tournament on Monday night against UC Irvine. Game time is 6:30 p.m. ET.
