BRONX, N.Y. — Taylor Wejnert scored a game-high 28 points off the bench on 10-of-13 shooting from the field and 7-of-7 shooting from the free-throw line to lead the Colgate women's basketball team past Norfolk State, 78-54, on Monday afternoon in the consolation game of the Fordham Holiday Tournament at Rose Hill Gym.
Wejnert had 18 points in the first half and finished the game with four rebounds and two assists in 24 minutes.
Colgate (3-9) opened the game on a 10-2 run capped by a fast-break layup by Candice Green with 16:29 left in the first half. Accurate opening-period shooting (16-of-29; 52.2 percent) gave Colgate a 43-25 lead at the break.
NSU (0-7) opened the second half on a 12-6 run and came within 12, 49-37, after a pair of free throws by Shaneka Lee (Newport News, Va.) with 13:40 left in the game. But the Spartans could not overcome their double-digit point deficit leading to their seventh consecutive loss.
Kendra Brim was the only other Colgate player to score in double figures. She finished 10 points and eight rebounds.
Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.) and Whitney Long (Raleigh, N.C.) each had 11 points for the Spartans. Long scored all her points in the first half and had a game-high five steals.
The Spartans make the short trip to South Orange, N.J. for a 1 p.m. matchup at Seton Hall on Wednesday.
