GREENSBORO, N.C. — Nicholas Wilson scored 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting off the North Carolina A&T bench as the host Aggies extended Norfolk State's losing streak to five with a 93-66 win in the MEAC opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Corbett Sports Center.
Wilson was 4-of-6 from behind the arc and 4-of-4 from the line. Robert Johnson added 16 points, Tavarus Alston 14 and Ed Jones 11 for the Aggies (5-3, 1-0), who shot 51 percent from the floor, 58 percent in the second half.
Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) led NSU (1-5, 0-1) with 26 points and Corey Lyons (Bronx, N.Y.) added 20. But they combined to shoot just 18-of-47 from the floor, 4-of-20 from 3-point range.
The Spartans held just one lead, at 2-0 after a layup by Kevin Worsley (Chesapeake, Va.) 30 seconds in. The contest was tight for the majority of the first half, but the Aggies used a late 9-0 run to take a 39-24 lead, matching their largest of the opening stanza. Alston scored the final five points in that run, and A&T went into the half with a 15-point cushion.
Johnson, Jones and Alston scored baskets on successive possessions to start the second half as the Aggies took a 48-27 lead. A&T would lead by as much as 34 points in the second half.
Thomas Coleman pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for the Aggies, who topped NSU 48-36 on the boards. A&T also attempted 36 free throws, making 22.
Lyons and Worsley grabbed eight rebounds each for NSU, which was hurt by 40 percent field-goal shooting and 21 turnovers.
The Spartans have 10 days off for first-semester exams before returning to action at Wright State on Dec. 17.
