62-point Second-Half Lifts N.C. A&T Women Over NSU, 90-59

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Ta'Wuanna Cook scored 18 points in the second half, while Amber Bland had 15 in the same period to help the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T score 62 second-half points en route to a 90-59 victory over Norfolk State at the Corbett Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.

NSU (0-5, 0-1 MEAC) led 29-28 at halftime after forcing 18 Lady Aggie turnovers, but A&T (4-3, 1-0 MEAC) buckled down on offense and turned up the defense to outscore the Spartans 62-30 in the second half.

The teams traded baskets and kept it close in the opening period. NSU took a 7-6 lead on a layup by Tyisha Bridges (Raleigh, N.C.) with 13:29 left in the half. The Lady Aggies took a six-point lead, 18-12, after two free throws by Shantar Waddell, but the Spartans slowly chipped away at that lead to go up by one, 29-28 at the break.

The Spartans increased the lead to three, 31-28, with 19:08 left in the game on a jumper by Bridges. A free throw by Cook with 16:49 left tied the game at 33-all and A&T took off from there, outscoring NSU 57-26 the rest of the way to seal the win.

A&T shot 37.5 percent (27-of-72) from the field for the game and 76.6 percent (36-of-47) from the charity stripe. They had 13 steals, 13 assists, and grabbed 62 rebounds. NSU hit 19 of its 60 shots (31.7 percent) from the floor, 5-of-17 (29.4 percent) from beyond the arc and 16-of-21 (76.2 percent) from the free-throw line.

The Spartans had 36 turnovers, 11 steals and 32 rebounds. The Lady Aggies went 0-for-8 from 3-point territory and NSU did not grab an offensive rebound in the first half.

Cook finished the game with 20 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Bland tallied 18 points and five boards. Brittanie Taylor-James had a double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds, both game-highs.

Danelle Tate (Stafford, Va.) led NSU with 13 points. Bridges was the only other Spartan to score in double figures as she finished with a career-high 10 points.

The Spartans are off for the next three weeks and return to action on Dec. 28 when they take on Fordham at 1 p.m. in the Fordham Holiday Tournament. Bryant and Colgate are also participating in the tournament.
