LANDOVER, Md. — The Norfolk State men's track team earned three first-place finishes en route to a first-place standing after the first day of competition at the 2008 MEAC Indoor Track and Field Championship at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.
The NSU men, seeking to become the first MEAC men's program to win three straight indoor titles since South Carolina State achieved the feat from 1988-91, tallied 52 points Friday, 20 ahead of second-place Delaware State through four events.
First-year sophomore Corey Vinston (Hampton, Va.) highlighted the day by provisionally qualifying for next month's NCAA Indoor Championship en route to the long jump title. He set a new school indoor-record with his leap of 24 feet, 7 ¾ inches to take home the gold medal. Teammate Marlon Woods (Norfolk, Va.) was second in the event with a best leap of 24-5.
Sophomore Brett Dodd (San Antonio, Texas) won the pole vault championship Friday with a personal-best and school indoor record height of 14-2 ¾. NSU's other first place Friday came via the distance medley relay team. The quartet of Dominic Luka (Marietta, N.Y.), Keenan Harris (Norfolk, Va.), Tyrell Moon (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Carlton Phipps (Lynchburg, Va.) won the event in 10:10.67.
The Spartans also got 11 points from the 800 meters as Luka placed second (1:54.07) and Harris (1:54.93) sixth.
The final day of competition starts Saturday at 9 a.m. with the women's pole vault and pentathlon events. Early afternoon field events include the men's heptathlon, shot put, high jump and triple jump. Spectators will see the men's and women's mile run, 60m hurdles, 60m dash, 200m dash and 400m dash. The championship will conclude with the women's 3,000m and men's 5,000m run, and the men's and women's 1,600m relay.
