Four Spartan Men Qualify for Regionals at Outdoor Season Opener

Woods, Vinston, Massenburg and Wilson Shine for NSU

- Norfolk State sophomore Marlon Woods (Norfolk, Va.) registered NCAA regional qualifying marks in the long and triple jumps Saturday to highlight the Spartan men's track team's outdoor season opener at the Wake Forest Open.
 
Woods set a new school record with his winning long jump of 25 feet, 4 ½ inches. He also took sixth in the triple jump with his sixth-place leap of 49-3 ½.
 
Teammate Corey Vinston (Hampton, Va.) also earned a regional qualifying mark in the long jump. He placed second (25-3 ¼).
 
Hurdlers Aramis Massenburg (Ettrick, Va.) and Avery Wilson (Portsmouth, Va.) both ran regional qualifying times in the 110 hurdles. Massenburg won the event in 14.14 seconds. Wilson, who pulled up with cramps in the finals, ran his qualifying time of 14.28 in the prelims.

Other highlights included both NSU relay teams finishing second in their respective races. The 4x100 team of Woods, Vinston, Brandon Harris (Norfolk, Va.), and Troy Wilkerson (Norfolk, Va.) ran a time of 40.93 seconds, second only to East Carolina (40.72). The Spartans' 4x400 team of Wilkerson, Raymond Brown (Richmond, Va.), Carlton Phipps (Lynchburg, Va.) and Randy Lee (Washington, D.C.) ran a time of 3:12.34, trailing only Georgia Tech (3:11.84).

Wilkerson capped his solid day with a time of 21.47 to place eighth in the 200 meters. Among distance runners, Jonathan Soimo (Kapsabet, Kenya) ran a personal-best time of 15:12.88 to come in 16th in the 5,000 meters.

The Spartans return to the track next Friday and Saturday at the Raleigh Relays.
