Spartan Bowling Advances to MEAC Championship Semifinals

NSU is 1 Win Away from Sunday's Championship Round

Day 2 Results

HAMPTON, Va.
– The Norfolk State women's bowling team came up with two clutch wins on Saturday to advance to Sunday morning's MEAC Championship semifinals at the Sparetimes Bowling Lanes.

The Spartans, seeded seventh out of the eight teams after Friday's qualifying rounds, began Saturday by knocking off No. 2 seed Delaware State. The Spartans downed the Hornets, the 11th-ranked team in the nation, 4-1 in the best-of-5 baker format.

In the second round, NSU outlasted No. 6 Hampton, 4-3-2 in a match that stretched to nine games. The Spartans won the first two games against Hampton, but the Lady Pirates rallied with two straight wins of their own to tie it at 2-all. In what would have been the deciding game, the teams tied with 163 pins apiece, stretching the game to a best-of-7 format.

Hampton won the sixth game, 205-148, but NSU again forced a tie in game seven, with a 189-173 edge. That sent the match into a best-of-9 format. The teams tied one more time in game eight, 166-all, before NSU won the ninth game, 203-132.

The Spartans then faced top-seeded Maryland Eastern Shore in the winner's bracket final. The Lady Hawks, ranked No. 2 in the nation, won that matchup 4-1, sending NSU into Sunday's elimination round against DSU.

Sunday's semifinal round begins at 9:30 a.m. The winner of that round advances to the 11:45 a.m. championship against UMES. The championship will be aired on a tape-delay basis on ESPNU on Apr. 3.
