WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Howard University women's basketball team beat Norfolk State 93-84 on Monday night at Burr Gymnasium, avenging the Spartans' 94-88 overtime-win on Feb. 4 at Echols Hall.
The game was a close one to the end. NSU (5-21, 1-14) was up by seven, 71-64, with 9:34 left in the game. But Howard (4-24, 3-12 MEAC) slowly chipped away at the lead and took over on a jumper by Amanda Edwards with 4:38 left to put the Lady Bison up 77-76.
The Spartans came within four, 88-84, on a 3-pointer by Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.), but could get no closer.
In the first half, NSU overcame a nine-point deficit to take a 45-42 lead into halftime.
There were five ties and six lead changes in the game, and NSU scored 48 points in the paint and 24 on Howard turnovers.
Asha Santee led Howard with 24 points, while Tamaya Daniels had 23. Reyna Gross had a double-double of 19 points and 10 assists. Edwards tallied 14 points on 7-of-7 shooting from the field.
Reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week, Danelle Tate (Stafford, Va.), paced NSU with her first career double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds. Payne had 19 points, Tashawna Higgins (Toronto, Ontario) recorded 15 points, five rebounds and four assists, and Genor Dalton (Martinsville, Va.) had a career-high of 13 points and matched her personal-best with three assists.
Ebony Gibbs (Petersburg, Va.) also scored in double figures for the Spartans, recording 10 points.
The Spartans conclude the regular season on Thursday at North Carolina A&T. Tip time is 5:30 p.m.
