CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In just his second track meet after completing play with the NSU men's basketball team this March, high jumper Raphael Hall (Chesapeake, Va.) qualified for the NCAA East Regional track meet with a personal-best jump of 7 feet, ½ inch on Saturday at the Tony Waldrop Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina.
Hall finished third in the high jump Saturday behind winner Dante Nall of North Carolina (7-2 ½) and NSU teammate Marlon Woods (Norfolk, Va.). Like Hall, Woods also cleared a personal outdoor-best 7-0 ½, but took second place due to few misses.
Woods and Hall weren't the only Spartans to post personal bests on Saturday. Senior Raymond Brown (Richmond, Va.) ran a personal-best time of 21.68 seconds to finish fifth in the 200 meters. Sophomore Meredith Whitties (Petersburg, Va.) ran a PR of 53.63 to place sixth in the 400-meter hurdles. Sophomore Jonathan Soimo (Kapsabet, Kenya) finished third in the 3,000 meters in a personal-best time of 8:49.86.
Keenan Harris (Norfolk, Va.) also brought home a third-place finish for NSU on Saturday, running a time of 1:53.39 in the 800.
Head coach Kenneth Giles was also pleased with his 110-meter hurdlers, Avery Wilson (Portsmouth, Va.) and Aramis Massenburg (Ettrick, Va.). Despite strong a strong headwind, Wilson (14.48) and Massenburg (14.60) finished second and third, respectively. Giles also singled out pole vaulter Brett Dodd (San Antonio, Texas) for clearing 14-1 ½ , which was good enough for sixth place.
The Spartan men will compete next Saturday, Apr. 19, at the Morgan State Legacy Meet in Baltimore, Md.
