Tony Murphy Named to All-State 2nd Team

NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State senior guard Tony Murphy (Paterson, N.J.) was voted to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) all-state second team, the organization announced today.

Murphy led NSU in scoring for the third straight season, averaging 17.9 points per game in 2007-08. That ranked him third in the MEAC. Murphy also averaged 3.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.7 steals per game in helping NSU tally just its second winning record (16-15) in the program's Division I history. He leaves NSU as the school's No. 7 all-time leading scorer, with 1,815 points, the most in the program's Division I era.

Murphy became the first Spartan ever to earn some form of All-MEAC recognition in all four of his seasons. He was an all-rookie team selection as a freshman in 2005. Murphy earned second-team All-MEAC honors as a sophomore and junior before earning first-team accolades this spring.

The VaSID first team consisted of Sean Singletary of Virginia, Will Thomas of George Mason, Eric Maynor of VCU, Reggie Williams of VMI, and A.D. Vassallo of Virginia Tech. Murphy was joined on the second team by Liberty's Alex McLean, Virginia Tech's Deron Washington, VCU's Jamal Shuler and Longwood's Kirk Williams.

Singletary was named VaSID State Player of the Year, Virginia Tech's Seth Greenberg was named Coach of the Year, and Richmond's Kevin Anderson was chosen Rookie of the Year.
