Marlon Woods Won the Long Jump and High Jump on Friday at the MEAC Championship

Day 2 Results

BALTIMORE, Md.
– Sophomore Corey Vinston (Hampton, Va.) set a new MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship meet record in the long jump, only to be surpassed by teammate and fellow sophomore Marlon Woods (Norfolk, Va.) less than an hour later during day 2 action on Friday at Morgan State's Hughes Stadium.

The Spartans, seeking their third consecutive conference outdoor title and sixth straight in all, are in first place with 70 points after five events. NSU is seeking to become the first MEAC men's track program to sweep the indoor and outdoor track titles in three consecutive years.

Woods leapt a personal-best 26 feet, 1 inch to take the long jump title. His long jump, however, will not stand as the MEAC record because the wind was over the allowable limit. He also won the high jump championship later in the day, his fourth conference high jump title in as many meets as a Spartan, with a top height of 7-2¼.

Vinston took home second place in the long jump with his personal-best jump of 26 feet, ¼ inch. It was his first and only attempt but still beat the previous record of North Carolina A&T's Darron Frazier (25-8) in 1997.

Junior Kenrick Brathwaite (Nassau, Bahamas) also finished sixth in the long jump to give NSU a total of 21 points in that event. Woods, Vinston and Brathwaite were already among the region's top qualifiers in the long jump before this weekend's conference meet.

NSU also had three athletes score in the high jump as Woods took first, junior Raphael Hall (Chesapeake, Va.) third (6-10 ¼), and sophomore Henry Vaughn (Norfolk, Va.) was sixth (6-8 ¼ ).

Woods and Vinston kept busy on Friday. They joined teammates Raymond Brown (Richmond, Va.) and Trayman Hill (Greensville County, Va.) in the 4x100 relay, another highlight for the Spartans on Friday. The quartet won their 4x100 heat in a time of 40.21 seconds, which qualifies them for next month's NCAA East Regional and is the fastest time of the season for the Spartans. Only Hampton, which won its heat in 40.16, ran a faster time in the qualifying heats. The finals of the 4x100 are on Saturday.

Also Friday, senior Reginald Sands (Nassau, Bahamas) was third in the discus (153-9) and sophomore Meredith Whitties (Petersburg, Va.) was third in the decathlon (5,924 points). Hillary Cheruiyot (Eldoret, Kenya), Jonathan Soimo (Kapsabet, Kenya) and Dominic Luka (Marietta, N.Y.) rounded out the day by finishing third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 5,000 meters.

Saturday's final day of competition begins at 10 a.m. with the men's and women's triple jump, the men's shot put and pole vault, and the women's discus.
