TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Norfolk State concluded its stint in the NCAA East Region Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Florida State University, as five NSU athletes competed.
The Spartan men's 4x400 meter relay team was unable to finish its heat. NSU finished the regional with 12 team points, its most ever. That was good for 16th place among the 57 teams represented.
The NSU women were represented Saturday by freshman She'Anna Mitchell (Hampton, Va.), who capped a strong rookie campaign. The MEAC outdoor high jump champion, Mitchell failed to clear the opening height of 1.71 meters (5-7.25) but figures to be one of the key returners off a young team next season.
The Spartan men will send a pair of athletes to the NCAA National Track and Field Championships in two weeks in Des Moines, Iowa. Raphael Hall (Chesapeake, Va.) and Marlon Woods (Norfolk, Va.) earned automatic berths in the nationals in the high jump and the long jump, respectively, with top-five finishes on Friday.
Woods also placed sixth Friday in the high jump. He will likely be selected for one of the at-large bids in that event, as well. Woods, who was slated to compete in the triple jump Saturday, sat out the competition due to the effects of cramps he suffered on Friday.
