BALTIMORE, Md. — Shante Cummings scored a game-high 17 points, while Whitney Cunningham had a double-double of 13 points and 15 rebounds as the Coppin State women's basketball team defeated Norfolk State 77-42 on Saturday afternoon at the Coppin Center.
NSU (0-10, 0-2 MEAC) has now tied the second-worst start in school history with its 10 consecutive losses. Only the 1997-98 team lost more games to start the season when they began the year 0-15.
CSU (2-10, 1-1) jumped out to an early 10-point lead, 13-3, on the second of two free throws by Cunningham with 15:04 left in the first half. NSU cut the lead to three, 15-12, on a jumper by Whitney Long (Raleigh, N.C.) with 9:42 remaining in the period, but the Lady Eagles went on a 17-5 run to end the first half and the Spartans could get no closer than 17, 34-17, for the rest of the game.
For CSU, Lakeytah Irving and Shinaa Cross had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.) led NSU with 11 points, while Danelle Tate (Stafford, Va.) had 10. Defensively, Sasha Wilson (West Columbia, S.C.) had team- and career-highs of six rebounds and three steals. Wilson also played a career-best 23 minutes.
The Spartans stay in Baltimore for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with Morgan State (9-4, 1-1) on Monday.
