BLACKSBURG, Va. – Juniors Marlon Woods (Norfolk, Va.) and Corey Vinston (Hampton, Va.) highlighted a stellar weekend by Norfolk State's field athletes by provisionally qualifying for March's NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in the long jump on Saturday at the Hokie Invitational at Rector Field House.
Woods set a new school indoor record and indoor personal-best, leaping 25 feet, 6 inches to finish first. Vinston also set a new indoor PR by jumping 25-1 ¾ to come in second in the event. Both marks are better than Vinston's previous school record of 24-7 ¾ set at last year's MEAC Indoor Championship. They join 60-meter hurdler Aramis Massenburg (Ettrick, Va.) as NSU has three provisional NCAA qualifiers through two competitions.
Vinston also placed second and Woods third in the triple jump. Both had a top mark of 50-2 ½.
Senior Raphael Hall (Chesapeake, Va.) had NSU's other first-place finish, clearing 6-10 ¾ to win the high jump.
Woods and Vinston both also ran well in their one track event of the weekend. Woods placed third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.03) and Vinston was fourth in the 60 meters (6.78).
Other highlights for NSU in track events include Keenan Harris (Norfolk, Va.) breaking his own school record in the 1,000 meters (2:31.62), Josef Tessema (Springfield, Va.) running a PR in the mile (4:19.15) to take sixth place, and the 4x400 team of Tyrell Moon (Philadelphia, Pa.), Darryl Brickhouse (Suffolk, Va.), Carlton Phipps (Lynchburg, Va.) and Sherrard Marrow (Hampton, Va.) finishing second in 3:16.17.
The Spartans are back in action next weekend at the Hampton Invitational at the Boo Williams Sportsplex.
