FAMU Downs NSU 3-0 in Volleyball Matchup

NORFOLK, Va. — Jovana Blazeski had 14 kills and Maria Gomez add 12 as the Florida A&M volleyball team defeated Norfolk State 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 26-16) at Echols Hall on Sunday afternoon. FAMU improved to 6-7 overall, 2-0 in the MEAC with the win, while NSU fell to 4-16, 1-1 MEAC.

FAMU took the first set easily, but NSU gave the Lady Rattlers a tough fight in set 2. Down 11-7, the Spartans benefitted from five straight FAMU errors to go up 12-11. The teams traded points for the next few minutes. Charlotte Armstead (Williamsburg, Va.) tied it at 20-all on a kill, but the Lady Rattlers went on a 5-2 run to take the set.

FAMU jumped out to a 10-5 lead to start the third set and held NSU at bay for most of the set. The Spartans could get no closer than two, 13-11, the rest of the way.

Susan Egoavil had a match-high 13 digs and Jessica Bond led all players with 37 assists for FAMU.

For the Spartans, Elayne Greer (Bakersfield, Calif.) tallied a career-high 14 kills. She hit .565 and added 1.5 blocks, once service ace and one dig. Nicole Kessner (Blacksburg, Va.) had 24 assists and six digs.

NSU hits the road to take on James Madison at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
