ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Jarne Gleaton had a match-high 17 kills and teammate Linne Garrett added 15 kills to help the South Carolina State volleyball team defeat Norfolk State 3-2 on Wednesday evening at Dukes Gymnasium. The Lady Bulldogs won 25-21, 26-24, 20-25, 19-25, 15-13.

Each set was close with both teams playing hard all the way through. SCSU (11-15, 3-2 MEAC) took the first two sets, but NSU (6-19, 2-3 MEAC) rallied to win the next two.

In the decisive fifth set, the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. The Spartans got on the board on a service ace by Kristen Burt (Ashburn, Va.) to bring the score to 3-1. The closest NSU got was 14-13 on an ace by Solange Honore (San Fernando, Trinidad). But an attack error by Tracey Copley (Virginia Beach, Va.) sealed the win for SCSU.

Bria Brimmer had 46 assists and Lauren Harris had 15 digs for the Lady Bulldogs.

Charlotte Armstead (Williamsburg, Va.) hit .414 with a career-high 15 kills. Copley also had a career night with 14 kills and added seven digs. Nicole Kessner (Blacksburg, Va.) had a double-double of 50 assists (career-high) and 11 digs and Honore tallied 17 digs. Elayne Greer (Bakersfield, Calif.) added12 kills.

 The Spartans return home to host Bethune-Cookman at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
