NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State sophomore Nicole Kessner (Blacksburg, Va.) had a career-high 10 kills and added a match-high 24 assists to lead NSU to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 26-24) Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over North Carolina A&T on Friday night at Gill Gymnasium.
The Spartans improve to 4-15 overall and 1-0 in the MEAC with the win, while the Lady Aggies fall to 1-20, 0-1 MEAC.
NSU got on the board first and started the first set on a 6-3 run. But A&T tied things up early and rallied to take an 11-8 lead on a service error by Tracey Copley (Virginia Beach, Va.). Things were close in the middle of the set, but the Spartans took an 18-17 lead on a service ace by Copley and did not look back the rest of the way.
The Spartans breezed through the second set and held off a late rally by the Lady Aggies in the third set to take the match.
For A&T Tiffany Mellette had a match-high 11 kills, while Amber Inman had 17 assists.
Elayne Greer (Bakersfield, Calif.) had seven kills and 1.5 blocks and Solange Honore (San Fernando, Trinidad) added nine digs.
The Spartans get one day of rest before they host reigning MEAC champion Florida A&M (5-7, 1-0 MEAC) at 3 p.m. on Sunday in Echols Hall.
