NSU Volleyball Falls 3-0 to FAMU

Charlotte Armstead led the Spartans with eight kills.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Jovana Blazeksi had a match-high 18 kills, while teammate Maria Gomez tallied 11 kills as the Florida A&M volleyball team handed Norfolk State a 3-0 loss on Sunday afternoon at the Al Lawson Center. FAMU won the match 28-26, 25-18, 25-15.

The Lady Rattlers improved to 14-8 on the season and 8-0 in the MEAC, while NSU fell to 8-21 overall and wrapped up MEAC play with a 3-5 record. Going into this weekend's MEAC Volleyball Tournament, FAMU will be the No. 1 seed in the southern division and the Spartans should be No 4. Official seedings will be released by the conference later this week.

The first set was the closest of the entire match. Tied at 24-all, Elayne Greer (Bakersfield, Calif.) put NSU by up one with a kill. But an attack error by Tracey Copley (Virginia Beach, Va.) evened the score at 25-all.

Consecutive errors by both teams kept the set tied at 26-all and back-to-back Lady Rattler kills sealed the win for FAMU. The Lady Rattlers cruised through sets 2 and 3 to take the match and remain undefeated in conference play.

Charlotte Armstead (Williamsburg, Va.) led NSU with eight kills, while Nicole Kessner (Blacksburg, Va.) had a team-high 27 assists.

The Spartans play their final regular-season match on Wednesday. They take on the Hampton at 6 p.m. in a match that was rescheduled after last week's storm in the Hampton Roads area.
