DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Norfolk State bowling team posted a 6-4 record, including 4-4 in the MEAC standings, at last weekend's MEAC Southern Division meet hosted by Bethune-Cookman.
The winning weekend was the third straight to start the season for the Spartans, who are now 22-8 overall and 10-6 in the MEAC South. But it didn't come easy, as NSU was slow out of the gate with a 2-3 record in Saturday's team games. NSU lost to FAMU, Bethune-Cookman and N.C. A&T, but posted wins over Winston-Salem State and South Carolina State. Sheila-Marie Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) led the Spartans with a 193 average (965 total pins), which was fourth-highest for all MEAC bowlers in the team games last weekend.
But NSU responded with a strong showing in Sunday's baker games, going 4-1 overall. NSU ousted WSSU, SCSU, N.C. A&T and B-CU before losing a tight four games to three match to FAMU.
The Spartans are in action at the UMES Hawk Classic this Friday through Sunday in Millsboro, Del.
