SAVANNAH, Ga. — Sophomore guard Whitney Long (Raleigh, N.C.) scored a career-high 30 points, 16 in the first half, to lead the Norfolk State women's basketball team to a 57-45 win at Savannah State at Tiger Arena on Tuesday night.
Long was 9-of-15 from the field for the game and 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. She also had four rebounds, two assists and one steal in 32 minutes of play.
Long got things started for NSU (2-5) by scoring the first four points of the game. The Spartans led for most of the first half, but a jumper by Brittany Gilbert with 7:17 left in the half tied the game at 20-all. Marian Brooks (Woodbridge, Va.) answered on the other end with a layup to regain the lead for the Spartans with 7:02 left.
SSU (7-4) took a one-point lead, 28-27, after a layup by Kymberli Stamps, but NSU went into the break with a three-point advantage, 31-28.
Things were close in the second half, but the Spartans were able to limit the Lady Tigers to just 17 points in the second half and forced 12 SSU turnovers.
For the game, NSU shot 40.5 percent (17-of-42) from the field and was 22-of-31 from the charity stripe. SSU hit 20 of its 53 shots from the floor and only went to the free-throw line five times for the game (2-of-5).
Darice Fountaine led the Lady Tigers with 10 points and had seven rebounds. Stamps had seven points and two rebounds, while Alisha Nelson had seven points and eight boards.
Danelle Tate (Stafford, Va.) was NSU's other player in double figures. She had 10 points and added four rebounds and one steal. Brooks had career-highs in rebounds (seven) and assists (one).
The Spartans will not get much rest as they return home to host William & Mary at 6 p.m. on Friday.
