Kirby Leads NSU Women at CNU Holiday Open

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.
— Norfolk State junior Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.) turned in three top-five finishes for the Spartans on Saturday at the Christopher Newport Holiday Open at the Freeman Center. Kirby finished second in the long jump (18 feet, 7 ¾ inches), third in the 55-meter hurdles (8.14) and fifth in the high jump (5-3).

Other highlights from the meet included sophomore Shanneka Claiborne's (Ettrick, Va.) second-place finish in the 200 meters in 25.37 and Allyssa Pickett's  (Hampton, Va.) fourth-place finish in the 400 in 1:42.32.

Jonee Artis (Chesapeake, Va.) cleared 5-5 in the high jump to finish fourth and Ashleigh Joseph (Chesapeake, Va.) came in ninth in the pole vault (8-10¼).

Newcomers Elaine Rhodes (Norfolk, Va.) and Kaleena Gray (Coatesville, Pa.) also did well in their respective events. Rhodes finished fourth in the long jump (18-2¼) and the triple jump (37-6¾) and ran a 26.24 in the 200 meters. Gray finished eighth in the shot put and 10th in the weight throw after hitting marks of 41-2½ and 45-0¼, respectively.

The Spartans return to action after the Christmas break at the George Mason Father Diamond Invitation on January 9, 2010 in Fairfax, Va.
