Spartans Fall 6-1, 18-0 to Canisius in Season-Opening Doubleheader

NORFOLK, Va. — The Canisius College softball team swept a doubleheader from Norfolk State, winning 6-1, 18-0, at the NSU Softball Field on Sunday morning.

In game 1, Canisius (2-0) scored runs in each of the first two innings and held a 2-0 lead until Danielle Wright (Safety Harbor, Fla.) hit a lead-off homer in the bottom of the fourth inning to get NSU (0-2) on the board.

Canisius put four more runs on the board in the top of the seventh to seal the win. Mallory Alfred earned win, while Ky Brown (Woodsfield, Ohio) took the loss.

It was all Canisius in the second game as the Griffons tallied 19 hits and 17 RBI en route to an 18-0, five-inning win over NSU. Caroline Main earned the win after tossing a two-hit shutout. Elizabeth Castaneda (Montclair, Calif.) gave up nine hits and 10 earned runs in one and two-third innings in the losing effort.

NSU travels to Raleigh, N.C. to play North Carolina Central on Friday. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
