Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.
— Jamie Boyer scored 23 points and Neal Pitt added 21 points and 16 rebounds as host Maryland Eastern Shore broke its 15-game losing streak to Norfolk State with an 83-81 win on Monday night at the W.P. Hytche Center.

Boyer was 6-of-8 from 3-point range for the Hawks (7-18, 3-9 MEAC), who also snapped their six-game losing streak overall. NSU (8-15, 6-6) fell for the fourth time in the last five games.

UMES controlled most of the game, taking advantage of the absence of NSU leading rebounder Brandon Monroe (Raeford, N.C.) and slow starts by Spartan leading scorers Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) and Corey Lyons (Bronx, N.Y.).

The Spartans endured one of their worst halves of the season in the opening stanza. Despite holding UMES to 32 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes, NSU gave up 16 offensive rebounds to the Hawks, which led to nine second-chance points. The Spartans, meanwhile, committed 16 turnovers and trailed 32-25 at the half.

UMES led by as many as 10 in the second half, but NSU slowly clawed back into it behind the penetration of Deloach, Lyons and Aleek Pauline (Jamaica, N.Y.). Deloach scored 20 of his game-high 25 points in the second half, while Lyons dropped in 16 of his 17 after the break. The Spartans scored 56 points, their most in a half this season, on 49 percent shooting. But UMES shot 72 percent (18-of-25) to keep NSU at bay.

The Spartans had two chances to tie in the final seconds. Trailing 82-79, Deloach missed a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left. Later, NSU trailed 83-81 after Pitt missed two free throws with eight seconds left. But Marc Davis knocked away a long inbounds pass by Kyle O'Quinn (Jamaica, N.Y.) as the final horn sounded to preserve the Hawks' first win over NSU since Jan. 7, 2002.

NSU attempted a season-high 48 free throws, making 31. Deloach was 12-of-17 from the line and Lyons 8-of-12. Pauline scored 13 points, Kevin Worsley (Chesapeake, Va.) had 10 points and seven rebounds, and O'Quinn corralled a team-high 10 boards.

Chris Conner added 17 points and was 4-of-5 from behind the arc for UMES, which shot 62.5 percent (10-of-18) from 3-point range. The Spartans, meanwhile, shot 15 percent (2-of-13) from deep.

The Spartans return home for their final five regular-season games. The homestand begins Saturday when NSU hosts South Carolina State for a 6 p.m. game at Echols Hall.
