PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — The Norfolk State women's basketball team scored 44 second-half points and was perfect from 3-point range and the free-throw line in the second half, but it was not enough to defeat Maryland Eastern Shore as the Lady Hawks posted a 95-64 win on Monday night at the W.P Hytche Center.
After only scoring 20 points in the first half, NSU (0-22, 0-12 MEAC) came out hot in the second period, but could not overcome the 31-point advantage UMES (11-12, 7-5) held after the first half. UMES also scored 44 points in the second half.
The Lady Hawks jumped out to an early lead and were up by 12, 23-11, with more than 10 minutes left in the opening period. By the end of the first half, UMES led 51-20.
In the second half, NSU rode the hot shooting of Whitney Long (Raleigh, N.C.) andRaychele Payne (Newport News, Va.), who had 13 and 10 points, respectively, in the second half. They both connected on their two 3-point attempts and went 2-for-2 at the charity stripe.
For the game, NSU shot 32.3 percent (21-of-65) from the field, 82.4 percent (14-of-17) from the free-throw line, and a season-high 72.7 percent (8-of-11) from 3-point range. UMES hit 32 of their 67 shots (47.8 percent) from the floor, six of their 18 3-point attempts (33.3 percent) and went 25-of-31 from the charity stripe.
April McBride led all players with 16 points and 15 rebounds for UMES. Tiffany Reid and Adobi Agbasi scored 16 points apiece, while Jasmine Speed had 10.
Long ended the game with a team-high 17 points and tied her career-high with five rebounds. Payne had 12 points and five rebounds and Marquilla Evans (Portsmouth, Va.) had 10 points.
The Spartans begin their five-game homestand on Saturday when they host South Carolina State at 4 p.m. The game has been designated Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Fans are asked to wear pink.
Halftime of the men's game will feature a "Celebration of Life" Parade with area breast cancer survivors.
