NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State softball team took a doubleheader from Coppin State, winning 17-0 and 9-0, both in five innings, on Sunday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field.
In game 1, NSU (4-2) tallied 17 runs and 15 hits and posted 12 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to end the game in five innings.
Every Spartan batter had a hit in the first game, including Amelia Lewis (Brampton, Ontario) who went 3-for-3 with three runs and a walk and Candice Vasquez (Montclair, Calif.) who hit .750 (3-for-4) with two runs and two RBI.
Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) earned the win after pitching five innings, allowing just two hits and striking out 10 batters. Paige Arnold tossed three and one-third innings and gave up 13 hits, 12 runs (nine earned) and walked four in the losing effort.s
In the second game, CSU (0-2) kept things closer, but could not put any runs on the board as eight Lady Eagles were left on base.
Casey Pomeroy (Fallon, Nev.) earned the first win of her Spartan career in a five-inning, three-hit shutout. She struck out six batters and walked three. Paige lost her second game of the day after allowing six hits, nine runs (seven earned) and striking out six in four innings.
NSU returns to action next Saturday at the Charleston Southern Tournament in Charleston, S.C. The Spartans play Campbell and Charleston Southern on Friday and Saturday. Friday's games are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and Saturday's games are at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
