Spartans' Skid Hits 4 with 68-64 loss to WSSU

NORFOLK, Va.
— Jamal Durham had 16 points and a game-high 17 rebounds to lead visiting Winston-Salem State to a 68-64 win over Norfolk State on Monday night at Echols Hall, the Spartans' fourth straight loss.

The Rams (8-18) hit 12 of their first 15 shots en route to an early 19-point first-half lead, and NSU (8-17) could not fully recover.

The Spartans missed 16 of their first 20 shots and trailed by 19, 27-8, 13 minutes into the game. NSU shot 23 percent (7-of-30) and trailed 32-19 at the half.

NSU opened the second half on a 17-7 run, capped by two Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) free throws, to get within 39-36 with 13 minutes remaining. But the Rams quickly answered with the next eight points, including 3-pointers by Durham and Brandon Hobbs, to push the lead back to double digits.

The Spartans later cut the lead to five (57-52) and had a chance to slice it to two, but Corey Lyons (Bronx, N.Y.) missed a 3-pointer with two and a half minutes left. NSU got within three on a couple other occasions in the final minute, but WSSU hit 5-of-6 from the foul line in the final 23 seconds.

Brian Fisher added 10 points for the Rams, who shot 51 percent from the floor.

Deloach led NSU with 25 points, eight rebounds and four steals. He surpassed the 1,000 career point mark in the second half. Lyons added 17 points.

NSU hosts Hampton at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
