CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Norfolk State softball team went 1-1 in the last day of the Charleston Southern Lady Bucs Classic, falling 11-0 to Campbell in five innings and beating host Charleston Southern 2-0 on Saturday at Buccaneer Field. The game against Charleston Southern was called after five innings due to inclement weather.
Campbell (12-5) roughed up the NSU (5-5) pitching staff for 10 hits and led 8-0 after the first three innings. NSU starting pitcher Ky Brown (Woodsfield, Ohio) gave up seven hits and eight runs (three earned) in two and two-third innings. Reliever Casey Pomeroy (Fallon, Nev.) was responsible for the Camels other three hits and three runs, but she did strike out five batters.
Christina Melton pitched a three-hit, five-inning shutout and struck out six for the win. At the plate, she went 2-for-3 and scored two runs.
Against Charleston Southern (7-9), the Spartans got all the offense they needed in the top of the fourth inning. Rebecca Barnes (Hampton, Va.) led off the inning with a home run and Meghan Ramsey (Virginia Beach, Va.) followed with a single. Ramsey later scored on a wild pitch to put NSU up 2-0. The game was called after the fifth inning, giving NSU its only win of the weekend.
Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) earned her third win of the season after throwing a four-hit, five-inning shutout. Sondra Vetter took the loss pitching three and one-third innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs and striking out seven batters.
The Spartans host the Spartan Clash this weekend, which includes Binghamton, Colgate and Delaware State. Games are scheduled for 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
NSU takes on Binghamton at 9 a.m. and Colgate at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Delaware State at 9 a.m. on Sunday. The Spartans will play in either the consolation or championship game at 1 p.m. or 3 p.m. on Sunday.
