NORFOLK, Va. — Hannah Mills went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI in game 1 to help the Maryland Eastern Shore softball team to a 7-4 win over Norfolk State, but Danielle Wright (Safety Harbor, Fla.) went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two home runs to lead NSU to a 5-3 win in game 2 of the doubleheader on Wednesday at the NSU Softball Field.
In the first game, NSU (10-8) scored early, putting two runs on the board in the bottom of the first. But UMES (5-3) scored one run in the second and three in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.
Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Hawks held a 7-3 lead. The Spartans were only able to get one across when Brianeisha Eure (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored on Meghan Ramsey's (Virginia Beach, Va.) single.
Inde Whitehurst picked up the win for UMES after giving up seven hits, four runs, three earned, and striking out seven batters in seven innings. Casey Pomeroy (Fallon, Nev.) fell to 1-2 on the season with the loss. She pitched four innings and gave up six hits and six runs (four earned).
The Lady Hawks got on the board first in the second game, but only managed three over the course of seven innings. Wright outscored the entire UMES team as she was responsible for NSU's last four runs of the game. She blasted a three-run homer to center field in the bottom of the fourth and hit a solo shot in the sixth to seal the win for NSU.
Spartan ace Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) pitched her eighth complete game of the season and improved to 8-2 with the win. She gave up eight hits and three runs, while striking out five and not giving up a walk. Mishayla Truttman fell to 1-2 after pitching four innings and allowing six hits, four runs (three earned), striking out two and walking two.
The Spartans play a doubleheader at Hampton on Thursday. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
