NORFOLK, Va. – The NSU men's tennis team recently wrapped up a 1-2 road trip to Sumter, S.C., dropping matches to Bethune-Cookman and South Carolina State while picking up a win over Maryland Eastern Shore.
The Spartans (2-4, 0-2 MEAC) suffered a hard-fought 4-3 loss to B-CU. NSU won at No. 1 doubles behind the team of Petr Krakora (Brno, Czech Republic) and Miroslav Vlcek (Vyskov, Czech Republic), but the Wildcats rallied with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to take the doubles point. That ended up being key, as the teams split the six singles matches. Vlcek, Arsenio Culver (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Krakora swept 1-3 singles, but the Wildcats took the lower three positions to earn the win.
The deciding singles match came down to the No. 6 position. B-CU's Kristofer Martin earned a three-set win over Jonathan Sessom (Houston, Texas), winning the third-set tiebreaker 7-4, to clinch the win for B-CU.
The Spartans struggled against defending champion SCSU, losing 7-0. Krakora and Vlcek again won at No. 1 doubles, but the Bulldogs won the final two doubles matches and all six singles contests.
NSU bounced back with a 7-0 win of its own against UMES. NSU won all three doubles matches and all six singles matches. Roosevelt Cooper (Washington, D.C.) and Jahvair Mullings (Kingston, Jamaica) both notched their first singles wins of the year at Nos. 4 and 6 singles, respectively. Vlcek, Culver, Krakora and Sessom also won singles contests.
NSU is back in action on Saturday at North Carolina Central.
