NORFOLK, Va. — Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) scored a game-high 25 points to lead four Norfolk State players in double figures as the Spartans won their second straight, 85-71, over Howard on Monday night at Echols Hall.
Corey Lyons (Bronx, N.Y.) added 23 points for NSU (10-17, 8-7 MEAC), his most since Jan. 26. Joseph Dorsett-Jeffreys (Bronx, N.Y.) added a season-high 14, and Aleek Pauline (Jamaica, N.Y.) tallied his first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
Kyle Riley hit a 3-pointer on Howard's first possession, but the Spartans went on a 13-2 run over the next five minutes and never trailed again. Deloach scored eight points during the spurt.
NSU led by 11, 41-30, at halftime, but the Bison (8-21, 6-9) mounted a rally in the second half behind Eugene Myatt. Myatt scored 17 of his team-high 20 in the second half, and a Riley 3-pointer cut the Spartans' lead to 58-55 with 9:43 remaining.
But NSU outscored the Bison 12-2 over the next three minutes. Pauline and Deloach had four points apiece in the run.
The Bison shot 50 percent from the floor, but NSU scored 35 points off 24 Howard turnovers. Fifteen of the 24 turnovers came as a result of NSU steals. Pauline had a game-high six, Deloach had five and Lyons three.
NSU also out-rebounded the Bison 37-27, behind Pauline and Brandon Monroe (Raeford, N.C.), who also had 10 boards. Pauline also had a game-high six assists.
Riley contributed 19 points, Randy Hampton 15 and Paul Kirkpatrick 10 for the Bison.
NSU concludes its regular season with an 8 p.m. home game on Thursday night against North Carolina A&T. The Spartans, currently in a tie with Bethune-Cookman for fifth place, must win and get some help to earn a first-round MEAC Tournament bye.
