DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The Norfolk State softball team dropped a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader 1-0, 8-7 (eight innings) to Bethune-Cookman on Saturday afternoon at Sunnyland Park. The Lady Wildcats improved to 9-26 on the season and 2-0 in the MEAC, while the Spartans fell to 11-15, 0-2.
In the first game, B-CU pitcher Allison Garcia threw a two-hit, complete-game shutout and struck out six for the win. The Spartans' two hits came from third baseman Candice Vasquez (Montclair, Calif.) and first baseman Jeanette Sauceda (Ontario, Calif.).
Garcia also carried the Lady Wildcats offensively as she drove in the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Her infield single scored Simone Ceasar from second.
Spartan pitcher Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) fell to 9-4 on the season after she gave up eight hits and one earned run in six innings of work.
The Spartans came alive in the second game, scoring seven runs and belting out 13 hits. They got on the board first when Meghan Ramsey (Virginia Beach, Va.) doubled to left center to bring home Rebecca Barnes (Hampton, Va.) safely. But B-CU posted three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead.
NSU exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh to take a 7-4 lead, but the Lady Wildcats scored three runs in the bottom of the frame to send the game into extra innings.
The Spartans could not produce any runs in the eighth and Brittani Austin drove in a run for B-CU to seal the win.
Garcia went the distance in game two, pitching eight innings and giving up 13 hits and seven runs (five earned). Velazquez took the loss after tossing one and two-third innings in relief. She gave up three hits and three runs (two earned).
The teams complete the three-game series with a single-game meeting at noon on Sunday.
