DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Freshman outfielder Danielle Wright (Safety Harbor, Fla.) was 2-for-2 with three runs, two RBI and a home run and junior catcher Meghan Ramsey (Virginia Beach, Va.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run to lead the Norfolk State softball team to a 7-4 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over Bethune-Cookman on Monday at Sunnyland Park.
NSU (12-15, 1-2 MEAC) benefited from having Sunday off after dropping Saturday's doubleheader 1-0, 8-7 (eight innings). Game 3 was originally scheduled for noon on Sunday, but was postponed until Monday morning because of rain and poor field conditions.
Wright's homer to left field got things started early for the Spartans. With two outs and a runner on base in the top of the first inning, Wright cleared the bases with her fifth home run of the season.
The Spartans tacked on one run in the third and three more in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead, but B-CU (9-27, 2-1 MEAC) scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to get on the board.
NSU would score once more in the seventh, while the Lady Wildcats only managed two more runs in the bottom of the frame.
For NSU, Brianeisha Eure (Virginia Beach, Va.) was 2-for-4 and scored two runs. Ashton Hinds led B-CU by going 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
Junior Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) picked up win for the Spartans after pitching seven innings and allowing 10 hits, four earned runs and striking out four. Allison Garcia took the loss for B-CU. She gave up eight hits, seven runs (five earned), struck out four and walked three in seven innings.
The Spartans return home for a 4 p.m. doubleheader against Longwood on Thursday.
