NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State softball team defeated Binghamton 4-0 and then fell 3-0 to Colgate on Saturday in the 2009 Spartan Clash at the NSU Softball Field.
Against Binghamton (2-4), Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) threw a seven-inning, four-hit shutout and struck out five batters to improve to 3-3 on the season. Offensively, Rebecca Barnes (Hampton, Va.) went 2-for-3 with two runs, a home run and an RBI, while Meghan Ramsey (Virginia Beach, Va.) was a perfect 3-for-3 and scored one run.
Barnes got NSU (6-6) on the board with her homer in the bottom of the first. The Spartans got three runs across in the seventh innings with Candice Vasquez (Montclair, Calif.) driving in two of them on a single to right field with two outs.
Sandy Meadows led Binghamton at the plate by going 2-for-4. Michelle Constantatos pitched six innings and gave up six hits and four earned runs in the losing effort.
In the Colgate (3-3) game, both defenses kept things close until the very end. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Raiders scored all the runs they would need for the win. Calla Yee scored when Spartan pitcher Casey Pomeroy (Fallon, Nev.) walked Melissa Baab-Renta with bases loaded and Nicole Siedhof drove in the other two runs with her double to left field.
Michelle Hollebeke earned the win by tossing a four-hit complete game. She struck out three batters and walked one. Pomeroy fell to 1-1 on the season after pitching five and one-third innings and giving up five hits, three earned runs, walking three and striking out two.
The Spartan Clash continues on Sunday with games at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. NSU takes on Delaware State in the first game and Binghamton and Colgate face off in the second game. The third and fourth seeds will play in the consolation game at 1 p.m. and the top two teams will play in the championship game at 3 p.m.
