NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State softball team downed Delaware State 1-0 in eight innings and beat Colgate 2-1 in the championship game to win the 2009 Spartan Clash Tournament title on Sunday at the NSU Softball Field.

The game against Delaware State (6-4) was a pitcher's duel between NSU's Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) and DSU's Meghan Lambertz. Velazquez (6-2) tossed a complete game, allowing five hits and striking out five for the win, while Lambertz (0-2) only gave up two hits and an unearned run. She retired five batters in seven and one-third innings.

Jeanette Sauceda (Ontario, Calif.) scored the lone run of the game. With runners on second and third, Amelia Lewis (Brampton, Ontario) got on base on a fielder's choice and Sauceda beat the throw home to end the game and give the Spartans the win.

In the championship game against Colgate (5-4), the Raiders took a 1-0 lead after Jen Ortega's RBI groundout that scored Brittany Hanrahan in the bottom of the third inning.

But NSU got two runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead. Velazquez scored on Casey Pomeroy's (Fallon, Nev.) single to left field and Brianeisha Eure (Virginia Beach, Va.) delivered the game-winning RBI with her single up the middle that scored Danielle Wright (Safety Harbor, Fla.) from second base.

Eure was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Pomeroy and Wright each went 2-for-3.

Velazquez earned the win after pitching four and one-third shutout innings in relief and not allowing any hits. Michelle Hollebeke took the loss after pitching a seven-inning, two hit complete game and giving up two earned runs.

The Spartans return to action on Tuesday when they host the Patriots of George Mason at 2:30 p.m.
