Game 1
Game 2

NORFOLK, Va. — Junior shortstop Jamie Raab (Houston, Tex.) went a combined 5-for-7 with two runs and two RBI to lead the Norfolk State softball team to a 7-0, 9-1 (five innings) Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of South Carolina State on Saturday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field.

NSU improved to 14-20 overall and 3-5 in the MEAC, while SCSU fell to 3-21 and 0-8.

The first two and a half innings of the first game went by without either team scoring a run. The Lady Bulldogs managed four hits in the top of the first and had bases loaded, but could not capitalize.

NSU got things started in the bottom of the third when Jeanette Sauceda (Ontario, Calif.) hit her third home run of the season. One batter later, Raab drove in the second run of the inning to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth, NSU exploded for four runs with two coming on Amelia Lewis' (Brampton, Ontario) first career home run. After a 45-minute rain delay in the middle of the fifth inning, the Spartans tacked on one more run in the sixth when Raab scored on an error by shortstop Emerald Freeman.

Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) earned the win after pitching seven shut out innings where she gave up eight hits and struck out four. Kimberlee Pereira allowed eight hits, six runs (five earned) and struck out one in 3.1 innings for the loss.

The Spartans attacked the Lady Bulldogs early in game 2 jumping out to a 5-0 lead after the first three innings. SCSU got on the board in the top of the fourth on Channell Thompson's homer to center field. But the Spartans answered in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single by Meghan Ramsey (Virginia Beach, Va.) and a two-run bomb by Lewis, her second homer of the day.

Rebecca Barnes' (Hampton, Va.) RBI double to center field gave NSU an eight-run lead and ended the game after just five innings.

Velazquez (12-10) picked up her second win of the day after giving up three hits and one earned run in five innings. Pereira lost her second game of the day after allowing 13 hits and nine runs (seven earned) in 4.1 innings.

For SCSU, Thompson led the way with a combined four hits in five at bats.

Every Spartan had at least one hit on the day, including Velazquez, who went 2-for-3 and scored twice in game 2.

The teams conclude the series at noon on Sunday.
