NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State softball team scored seven runs on three home runs in an 11-0 five-inning pounding of South Carolina State on Sunday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field. NSU (15-20, 4-5 MEAC) completed the three-game conference sweep of SCSU (3-22, 0-9 MEAC) with the win.
The Spartans got homers from junior Rebecca Barnes (Hampton, Va.), junior Meghan Ramsey (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sophomore Kristin Fungo (Norfolk, Va.).
NSU generated all the offense it would need in the first two innings. The Spartans tallied nine runs on 11 hits to jump out to a quick 9-0 lead. The Lady Bulldogs could not get anything going as they only managed three hits for the entire game.
Things opened up for the Spartan in the second inning when Barnes hit a three-run homer to left field. She was followed by Danielle Wright (Safety Harbor, Fla.) who hit a stand-up triple to right field. Wright scored shortly after when Ramsey hit a shot to left field.
Several Spartan reserves got a chance to see some playing time and made the most of it. Fungo pinch hit for Amelia Lewis (Brampton, Ontario) in the fourth inning and hit the first home run of her Spartan career, a two-run shot to left center to bring the score to 11-0. Marlene Harding (Newport News, Va.) who came in to catch for Ramsey in the fourth inning, went 1-for-1 and scored a run.
Elizabeth Castaneda (Montclair, Calif.) picked up her second win of the season after pitching three shutout innings and giving up two hits in relief. Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) started the game for the Spartans and gave up one hit and struck out one in two innings.
Raven Johnson fell to 2-8 on the season after tossing just one inning and giving up 11 hits and nine runs. She faced five batters in the second inning, but did not record an out before she was replaced.
NSU takes a break from conference action to play a doubleheader at the University of Virginia at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
