RALEIGH, N.C. – Hampton University, the Northern Division No. 1 seed, eliminated Southern Division No. 4 seed Norfolk State from the 2009 MEAC Tennis Championship on Friday morning with a 4-2 quarterfinal win at the Millbrook Tennis Center.
The Pirates advance to Saturday's semifinals against Southern Division No. 2 seed Florida A&M.
Hampton got victories at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to win the doubles point. The Spartans' No. 1 duo of Miroslav Vlcek (Vyskov, Czech Republic) and Petr Krakora (Brno, Czech Republic) earned an 8-3 win at No. 1 over Edson Alves and Marcelo Reda. But Hampton's teams of Nello Mattos and Sung-Kwon Baek at No. 2, and Gabriel Groh and Gellert Varga at No. 3, won 8-3 and 8-2, respectively, to earn the Pirates the first point of the match.
Vlcek routed Alves 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Krakora beat Reda 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3, but Hampton won the fourth through sixth singles spots to clinch the win. Mattos, Groh and Varga combined to drop just four games in winning a trio of straight-set matches.
The Spartans' season ends at 4-8. Vlcek finished his illustrious singles career at NSU with a 41-16 record. He posted a 42-10 career doubles record, including a 27-7 mark with fellow senior Krakora.
