Game 2
NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from North Carolina Central 12-0, 5-2 on Friday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field.
The Spartans (17-20) jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead after the first two innings of game 1. Danielle Wright (Safety Harbor, Fla.) doubled to center field in the bottom of the first inning to put NSU up 2-0 in the first inning. The Spartans followed with eight runs in the second, with four coming on Rebecca Rebecca Barnes' (Hampton, Va.) first career grand slam.
NSU picked up two more runs before the game ended after just five innings.
Spartan ace Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) picked up her 13th win of the season after pitching four-inning, one-hit shutout. For Central (3-34-1), Ashley Henderson got the loss after throwing just one inning in which she gave up six hits, seven earned runs and walked three.
Things were much closer in the second game as the Lady Eagles were able to get two runs on the board in the top of the third inning. But the Spartans already held a three-run advantage and tacked on two more in the bottom of the frame.
Elizabeth Castaneda (Montclair, Calif.) improved to 3-3 on the season after giving up five hits and two runs (one earned) in the first complete game of her Spartan career. She walked three and struck out three. Ashanti Stroud pitched 3.1 innings and allowed four hits, four runs (two earned) and walked four in the losing effort.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Princess Anne, Md. for a non-conference doubleheader against Maryland Eastern Shore.
